Discovering the Trails
Starved Rock State Park boasts a network of 13 miles of well-maintained trails, each offering a unique perspective of the park’s diverse ecosystems. From leisurely strolls to challenging hikes, there’s a trail for every skill level and age group, making it an ideal destination for families seeking to reconnect with nature.
French Canyon Trail
Embark on your journey by exploring the enchanting French Canyon Trail. This 2.5 mile out and back trail leads you to the picturesque French Canyon, where moss-covered walls rise around a serene pool of water. The lush vegetation and the soothing sound of trickling water create a magical atmosphere that will captivate both children and adults alike.
Wildcat Canyon Trail
For a slightly more challenging experience, head to Wildcat Canyon. On the way you’ll stop at Pontiac Canyon and Beehive Outlook for a two-mile loop trail through a verdant forest before descending into the rugged Wildcat Canyon. Marvel at the 80-foot waterfall cascading down the sandstone walls – a breathtaking sight that’s sure to leave your family in awe.
St. Louis Canyon Trail
St. Louis Canyon Trail is a super family-friendly option that leads to a stunning destination. This 1.5-mile out and back hike takes you to the heart of St. Louis Canyon, where a magnificent seasonal waterfall awaits. The towering canyon walls create a natural amphitheater, providing an excellent spot for family photos and peaceful moments of reflection, with plenty of cool exploration for your littles along the way.
LaSalle Canyon Trail
Venture further into the wonders of Starved Rock by taking the LaSalle Canyon Trail. This 2.3 mile out and back trail offers a scenic trek through woodlands and along the river, culminating in the breathtaking LaSalle Canyon. The canyon’s unique rock formations and the seasonal waterfall make it a must-see destination for families looking to experience the park’s diverse landscapes. This is our favorite of the waterfalls at Starved Rock, mainly because you can walk behind it. Your kiddos will love it too!
Starved Rock Lookout
The Starved Rock Lookout is perhaps the most iconic vantage point in the entire park. A 125-foot sandstone butte, Starved Rock rises majestically, providing visitors with panoramic views of the Illinois River and the surrounding woodlands. With easy access from the visitor center, you don’t want to miss this stop.
Lover’s Leap
Just a short distance from Starved Rock Lookout lies another captivating destination steeped in legend – Lover’s Leap. The tale goes that in the 1760s, during a conflict between the Illinois and Ottawa tribes, a forbidden love blossomed between an Illinois maiden and an Ottawa brave. Facing opposition from their tribes, the desperate lovers chose to leap from the cliff, hand in hand, into the churning waters below.
The site, now known as Lover’s Leap, carries the weight of this tragic yet poignant love story. The cliff overlooks the Illinois River, providing a dramatic backdrop to the legend. While the historical accuracy of the tale may be debated, the romantic aura surrounding Lover’s Leap is undeniable.
Seasonal Delights
Each season at Starved Rock brings its own unique charm. Spring bursts forth with wildflowers, summer provides lush greenery and vibrant foliage, fall brings a spectacular display of colors, and winter transforms the park into a serene wonderland. You might even get lucky enough to witness ice climbing! There truly is no ‘best’ season to visit our prized state park. One must see it in every season.
Our Comprehensive Map Guide for STARVED ROCK STATE PARK
We’ve highlighted some of our favorite spots to take in the utter magnificence of our ‘number one attraction in the state of Illinois’ Starved Rock State Park, but the trail system here is extensive and incredibly easy to access. Most of the 13 miles of trails are all connected to one another, so you could start out at any access point and see most of the park.
We always recommend visiting during the week if at all possible. The more popular our park becomes the more crowded the trails get on the weekends. If the weekend is all you have however, be sure to get there early in the morning before the rest of the world has had their coffee. Speaking of coffee, don’t miss the chance to stop by Bruce and Ollie’s in Utica for the best cup around (and hand dipped ice cream too!)
